Feature Friday: Devon J Imagery

I’m Devon Jones, a wife, mom, and photographer from Burkburnett, Texas, a town of about 11,000 that borders Oklahoma and is home to Sheppard Air Force Base.  I’ve lived here my whole entire life, and I’ve always participated in the arts (but not singing…it’s really bad). I graduated from Midwestern State University in 2005 with a bachelors degree in fine arts.

I started my photography business in 2008, and in 2014 I made the best decision ever: to specialize in seniors.  Seniors were always my favorite thing to shoot, and especially with girls.  I loved the confidence it gave them to see themselves on my screen, and I relate to girls that age easily because I’m totally still 17 on the inside!  They’re just so full of life.  When my daughter started becoming less of a baby and more of a full-fledged kid, I knew I had to make a change for our family’s sake.  My husband travels some with his job, and I wanted to make sure that I could be fully present for both him and our daughter, so I completely changed my business structure and started focusing on senior and teen girls only!

How did you first get started in photography?

After college, I worked at one of our wonderful local banks.  Exactly what you would expect from someone with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.  One day, my former wedding photographer (whom I remained close friends with) called me.  It was my birthday, actually.  She called me an idiot, and told me I shouldn’t be working at a bank, and I should treat myself to a DSLR and come second shoot some weddings with her.  It sounded like a GREAT idea, so that’s what I did!  Within months, I left my job and became a full-time photographer.  From then forward, I shot EVERYTHING; I eventually cut out newborns, then everything but weddings and seniors, then weddings…and got down to where I could specialize in seniors.

 

FUN FACTS:

I love rap music, and I really love to send snapchat lipsynchs of rap songs (and various other types of music) to my friends.
I am 33 years old and can still do a backflip on a trampoline.
I am deathly terrified of frogs and toads…legitimate panic attacks ensue and I’ve nearly passed out from fear of them before.
Any dessert that’s lemon flavored is my favorite, especially if there’s cream cheese involved.
