Feature Friday: SAK Photography

Tell us a little about yourself!

I am Sarah with SAK Photography! I was born and raised in the Kansas City area. When I was young I followed my high school sweetheart out to Southern, IN for a job. We have been here for 12 years, got married and now have two boys- Jaxson, 7 and Grayson, 4! When I am not working we are usually traveling around going on riding trips with our side by side and camper!

What do you specialize in? What made you want to focus on that specialty/specialties?

I specialize in Newborns and Families. Newborns were the easy part for me. I knew right off the bat this was where I belonged! Also, I knew from experience that those first few weeks as a mom were going to be like a blur. It comes and goes so quickly, and I wanted to be able to savor those moments for people! But, I had to work a little harder on falling in love with Family Photography. Once I figured out my purpose there everything else fell into place. Then, I knew I wasn’t there to capture everyone perfectly posed saying cheese. I was there to capture their emotion, the way they connect as a family, those deep belly laughs when they’re being tickled, and the soothing moments when they were feeling a little shy! Actually, I recently saw a quote that just hit home for me, “It is more important to click with people than to click the shutter.” – Alfred Eisenstaedt. This resonates with me because that could not be more true for me and my goal for their family session.

How did you first get started in photography?

I have always been drawn to babies. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve always wanted to be a Mom. When I finally became one, like a lot of photographers, I started taking pictures of my own kids and it quickly turned into a passion, and then a business. My Grandpa and my Dad were both wedding photographers way back in the day. Every single family function (still to this day) my Grandpa had his camera in his hand, just capturing all the candid moments of his family. So although it was never my intention to create a career when I first picked up that camera, it all fell into place and just made sense the more my passion grew for it.

How has using Iris impacted your business?

My memory is horrible! I was constantly forgetting to do the simple, yet time consuming things, like sending prep guides or confirmation emails. The stuff that made my professional business look not so professional. I was juggling between several different “tools” to keep the business side of things in check and it wasn’t working. Iris changed everything for me! It was like I had my very own assistant! Emails are now scheduled, everything is in one place, and I spend less time on my to-do list which means more time for my family!

What are your future goals for you business? What are you looking forward to?

I’d love to teach more! This is something I never thought this would be a love of mine. It started out with mentoring my high school neighbor a few years ago. Watching her grow from a 15 year old who just liked taking pictures to an 18 year old who has a very successful business has made me feel so proud at her growth. Then, watching her take every lesson I give her and just really soaking it all in, has been very rewarding for me. I’ve taught about 5 photographers now so I am looking forward to adding to that.

Fun facts:

-I binge watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S while I work, even though I’ve seen every episode several times. It never gets old to me!
-I’m the only girl in my little family but God knew what he was doing because I love doing stuff with “the boys”.
-I’d pick riding four wheelers and getting dirty over a beach or luxury hotel any day!
