Feature Friday: Tara Strohl Photography

Tara Strohl

Meet Tara Strohl

I’m Tara Strohl and I live with my husband and three little kids in Indianapolis. On any given day you can find me out on a run admiring the historic homes in our neighborhood, walking my kids to the pool, heading off to a music festival for some live music, or soaking in the sun any which way I can. I love being born and raised in the Midwest but dream of the day when I can jaunt off to the Caribbean for a few months at a time to be the blonde-haired beach bum mom to our three blonde-haired beach bum kids!

What do you specialize in? What made you want to focus on that specialty/specialties?

After a few years of photographing a variety of sessions, I’ve found that I most love outdoor sunrise and sunset family sessions and in-home lifestyle sessions. I find these sessions to be the most beautiful. To see a family loving each other in the beautiful golden light of early morning and late evening or to be invited into a home to photograph a family at their most real just makes me happy!

How did you first get started in photography?

I learned manual photography when I took classes in high school using an old basic Nikon camera and black and white film. There is something so nostalgic and soothing about a dark room! I continued shooting through college with the college newspaper and yearbook, but then let the hobby sort of drop for a while. I picked it back up again about five years ago and continued learning and growing as a photographer, shortly thereafter starting my business.

How has using Iris impacted your business?

Using Iris has brought a next-level professionalism to my business! When a client opens an email from me and it contains my logo right at the top, it makes me a little giddy. I love that all my client communication, client information, my calendar, my to-do list, and payment logs can be stored and tracked in one place! No more trying to find that post-it from last week to cross off my tasks!

If you could give one tip to someone just starting their photography business, what would it be?

Find a photographer you admire with whom you can mentor. Mentoring and workshops can be a huge monetary investment, but education in your field is worth it!

What are your future goals for you business? What are you looking forward to?

In the future I’d love to successfully market the impact of lifestyle photography and show families just how important it is to have quality photographs of you, your husband, and your children as you normally are in every day life. Mid-laugh, mid-bottle, mid-cooking, mid-nap, mid-play, mid-whatever it is that you enjoy doing together! I’m looking forward to serving more families in the Indianapolis and surrounding area with this style of photography.

Fun facts:

1. I lived in Puerto Rico for two years teaching elementary school and spending every other waking minute exploring beaches.

2. I believe there is no better food than potatoes.

3. I had an arthritic horse named Apache when I was a little girl and a head-butting pet sheep named Corny.
